Still from You Are a Toy, a scene in Toy Story

Take over every line of You Are a Toy and see how close you can get.

The scene

The gas station, at night, after the fall from the car. Woody and Buzz have exactly ten lines each in Toy Story’s first real fight, and the fight has two gears. The first is a genuine argument, Woody blaming Buzz for everything and Buzz blaming Woody for the window, interrupting each other in the way of people who have both been rehearsing their grievances. The second gear is Buzz’s: a solemn briefing about Emperor Zurg, a planet-destroying weapon, and the secret only he carries, delivered to a cowboy doll on a forecourt.

That’s what makes it fun. Buzz never once raises his voice; his lines get grander as Woody’s get more unhinged, until Woody breaks the news one word at a time, four words with a stop between each. Buzz answers with pity, which is worse than anger. Then Woody, alone, mutters Buzz’s phrase about Star Command back at him in a mocking voice, which is the pettiest and most human beat in the film. Two very different registers, evenly split, and a clean swap of who’s in control halfway through.

Performing it

Woody’s panic speech, the one about being lost and Andy moving, is a long line delivered fast and where most people trip, so map its breaths. Buzz’s Zurg briefing is four consecutive lines that should sound like a mission log: steady, low, no trace of irony. The four-word declaration is the trap; give each word its own stop and don’t speed up on the last. Buzz’s farewell should be gentle, which is what makes it sting. A two-player scene by design, ten and ten, with roles so distinct you won’t lose track. For the final line, do your own worst Buzz impression.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
