Still from Look, an Alien, a scene in Toy Story

Take over every line of Look, an Alien and see how close you can get.

The scene

Woody and Buzz, alone under a car at the petrol station in Toy Story, having the argument that has been coming since Buzz landed on the bed. Woody has twelve lines, Buzz thirteen, and they trade in short bursts: Woody warns Buzz off Andy, Buzz asks about a bonding strip, Woody snaps at the spaceman act, Buzz asks if he wants to file a complaint with Star Command. Then Woody pops the helmet and Buzz has a fit about dying on an uncharted planet, complete with a choke, a gasp and a line about his eyeballs.

The fun is that both of them are completely sincere and completely at cross purposes. Buzz believes every word of his own mythology; Woody has just realised the new toy is not doing a bit. The scene turns on that realisation — Woody's mocking announcement to nobody that the real Buzz Lightyear is here — and ends with the oldest trick in the book: Woody points, shouts that there is an alien, Buzz spins round, and Woody laughs for one very long cue. It is a scene of two voices, one exasperated, one earnest, and the exasperated one wins.

Performing it

Buzz's helmet panic is the set piece: a huge gasp, a dying noise, a choke, then two indignant sentences, all fast, so plan your breath. Play him with total conviction — the joke dies if Buzz knows he is funny. Woody's lines are the ones people rush, especially the long stumble where he squares up and the mock announcement that turns into a shout; give each its own shape. The final cue is one sustained laugh that runs longer than feels natural. Commit to it. An excellent two-player room — clean split, two clear attitudes — and the strongest comic angle is to underplay Woody so the alien line arrives like a slap.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
