Still from You Wanna Talk About Mothers, a scene in White Chicks

Take over every line of You Wanna Talk About Mothers and see how close you can get.

The scene

A sleepover that turns into a yo-mama tournament. Brittney opens it with a declaration that it’s mother time, and from there four girls take turns insulting one another’s mothers while a chorus of three, credited jointly as Karen, Lisa and Tori, supplies the gasps and giggles. Tiffany has seven of the nineteen lines, Brittney four, Heather and Megan three each, the trio two. This is the group scene of the three White Chicks moments here: no romance, no Latrell, just a circle of teenagers and a lot of shrieking.

The comedy is in the mismatch of skill. Brittney and Tiffany have real jokes with real timing. Heather starts one, loses it, and passes to Megan, who delivers a very long, very specific burn about mispronouncing a salad at a rooftop restaurant, then checks that she said it right. Tiffany’s biggest reaction, a drawn-out howl asking whether the victim is going to take that, is longer than most of the actual insults. A couple of the jokes are crude, so this one is more about the delivery than the words, and the delivery is deafening.

Performing it

The reactions are most of the work. Tiffany’s big whoops are written out at length and need to be as long as they look; a short one leaves silence. Megan’s salad joke is the longest line and the hardest, a run-on delivered with breathless precision, so learn its shape. Heather’s abandoned insult should trail off genuinely, like she really has forgotten. Brittney sets the pace and the pace is fast. The chorus lines are giggles and gasps, not words, so make them. Two players share five voices here, so pick a different pitch for each girl before you start. Solo, expect to be hoarse.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
