Still from A Thousand Miles, a scene in White Chicks

Take over every line of A Thousand Miles and see how close you can get.

The scene

Latrell Spencer, the basketball star played by Terry Crews, is driving Tiffany, who is actually an FBI agent in a wig and a lot of prosthetics, and he is trying very hard to be charming. Then the radio changes, and Vanessa Carlton comes on. Latrell’s face does something involuntary. He knows every word. He sings every word. He also does the piano part with his mouth. Latrell has eleven of the fifteen lines, Tiffany three, and the fourth voice is the dog, whose single credited contribution is a bite.

This is the scene people mean when they mention White Chicks, and it’s about the gap between the man Latrell thinks he is, a smooth predator who won’t bite unless asked, and the man who appears the moment the song starts. The rhythm is a short creepy prelude, a gasp, a bite, and then eighty seconds of solo performance with Tiffany silenced in the passenger seat. Because most of Latrell’s lines are sung, you’ll be singing too, at full commitment, in a car.

Performing it

The trap is the piano riff. Latrell fills the instrumental with mouth noises, and if you don’t plan yours the line goes dead. The singing should be loud, loving and slightly wrong, a man who learned the words alone; don’t try to be good. Before the music starts, keep Latrell low and slow, so the switch is a switch. Tiffany’s three lines are tiny and mostly reaction, so in a two-player room whoever draws her is there for the gasp and the moment of putting the music on, one of the best small parts in the game. Solo, it’s a pure singalong.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
