Still from Verity Song, a scene in Viral Video

Take over every line of Verity Song and see how close you can get.

The scene

A thirty-three-second jingle. Verity introduces herself in song, promises she knows about a million things and will do everything, and a Guy off to the side supplies the questions: the capital of France, and then what the cow says. Verity answers both with total confidence, in French for the first and in cow for the second, and signs off promising to do it all day. She has ten lines to his five, and every one of hers is sung; his are spoken, cheerful and a bit dim.

It’s a viral clip precisely because it’s so relentlessly upbeat about so little. The structure is call-and-response with the responses set to a bouncy melody, and the pleasure of dubbing it is either matching that bounce or undercutting it, playing Verity as an exhausted assistant hitting the same notes she’s hit a thousand times. The Guy is the straight man in the oldest sense: he exists to be impressed. Because it’s a song, you will be singing, and because it’s a jingle, you don’t have to sing well.

Performing it

Verity’s lines come in short bursts, three or four words, and they arrive on the beat, so the trap is being late; watch it once and count the gaps. Her two answers are mostly repeated syllables, oui and moo, much funnier delivered with real conviction than with a wink. The Guy should sound impressed by everything, including the cow. Keep his delivery flat and spoken against her sung lines; the contrast is the whole texture. This splits cleanly for two players, one singing and one asking. Solo, it’s a good warm-up: short, bouncy, impossible to take seriously.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
