The scene

Shrek, Donkey and Puss are in the dungeon, and Donkey is demanding his Miranda rights, which is where Shrek notes that the right to remain silent is not his problem, the capacity is. Then Gingy and Pinocchio drop in from above, and the escape hinges on Pinocchio telling a lie so his nose can reach the prisoners. Donkey supplies a suggestion involving ladies’ underwear, Pinocchio repeats it, and the nose does not grow. The argument about briefs versus thong, Puss spitting out a muffled mouse, and Shrek’s dawning plan involving the Muffin Man and a great deal of flour round it out.

Fifty-nine lines across six voices, with Shrek and Gingy leading at thirteen each, Donkey and Pinocchio on ten, Puss on seven, and six from assorted others including the Three Blind Mice talking from inside a cat. This is an ensemble farce played at speed: overlapping shouts, grunts of effort, a rapid volley of are-not and are-too, and a lot of falling. It settles at the end into the real turn, Shrek admitting he cannot let the kiss happen and asking Gingy about Drury Lane.

Performing it

The are-not, are-too volley between Gingy and Pinocchio is four lines with no air between them; rehearse it. Donkey’s Miranda rant is the longest speech and climbs to a shout on its last word. There are many grunts, several of them Gingy’s, and Puss has a spit; do not skip them. The mice speak muffled from inside Puss’s mouth, so cover yours. Six characters make this a great two-player room, and solo it is a workout in accents, Puss’s purr against Gingy’s squeak against Donkey’s motor mouth. End slow on Shrek’s flour line as the plan lands.
