Archimedes...?
The scene
Valve’s Meet the Medic short is an operating theatre with a war going on outside the window. The Medic is fitting a new heart into the Heavy, who is awake on the table and enjoying it far more than he should, while the Medic tells the story of how he lost his medical licence. Somewhere in the fridge, a Spy’s head asks to be put out of its misery. Archimedes, the Medic’s pet dove, keeps wandering into the wound. Of forty-nine lines the Medic carries twenty-six; the Heavy has eleven, and roughly half of those are laughter or screaming.
What makes it a joy to dub is how much of it isn’t words. There are eight or so laugh cues, and they escalate from a chuckle to two competing maniacal fits, with the Heavy laughing along out of politeness and then out of concern. The Scout bookends the whole thing from the battlefield, mostly in pain. The comic engine is the Medic’s bedside manner: cheerful, completely reassuring, and every single reassurance a lie, including the one he whispers to himself right after telling the Heavy that ribs grow back.

Performing it
The laughs are the job. Mumble through them and the scene goes silent for long stretches, so commit, and make each one a size bigger than the last. Keep the Medic’s spoken lines light and conversational; the horror is in the content, so the drier the better. The whispered aside after the ribs line is the trap everyone misses because it follows a scream. Heavy’s lines are short and sincere. Solo, you’re the Medic for most of four minutes. In a two-player room, one of you gets the surgeon and the other the patient, the Scout’s yelps and a lot of screaming, so pick who has the sturdier throat.
The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
