Still from Total Eclipse of the Heart, a scene in Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Take over every line of Total Eclipse of the Heart and see how close you can get.

The scene

From the 2010 Diary of a Wimpy Kid film: a room of middle-schoolers takes turns on the Bonnie Tyler ballad, one lyric fragment each, and it passes down the line like a hot potato nobody wants. Eight parts share seventeen lines. Six kids get a scrap apiece, one of them with an audible voice crack built in, and then Greg Heffley catches the song and rides its big build for six lines in a row, in a voice that has not yet dropped. The teacher’s two lines are the punchline, complimenting his lovely soprano in front of everyone.

This is a sung scene, so be honest with yourself about what you’re signing up for: you will be singing a power ballad, badly, on purpose. That’s the fun. The rhythm is a relay for the first half, quick handoffs where every kid tries to get their bit over with, and then a solo where Greg gets more committed just as he should be getting more embarrassed. The joke isn’t that anyone is a bad singer. It’s that the song keeps climbing and Greg keeps going up with it.

Performing it

The relay lines are short and land fast, so know your cue and don’t sing a syllable past it; the next kid is already in. Boy 1’s line has the crack written into it, so plan where your voice breaks. Greg’s six-line run is the trap: it climbs steadily, and if you start high you have nowhere to go. Begin timid and let the last two lines be full-throated and an octave too high. The teacher should sound thrilled, not sarcastic. In a two-player room the relay bounces between you, one of the funnier scenes to share if you’re both out of tune.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
