Still from Pringles Ad, a scene in Rick and Morty

Take over every line of Pringles Ad and see how close you can get.

The scene

This was a real commercial, the Rick and Morty Super Bowl spot from 2019, and it is a small horror film about product placement. Summer wonders how much Pringles pays people to appear in these ads; Rick says hardly anything. Then Morty brightly suggests stacking flavours to make a spicy barbecue pizza stack, and Rick tackles him, because that is not Morty. It is a robot. They are trapped inside a commercial, taken in their sleep, the door won’t crack, and the robot keeps cheerfully reciting flavour combinations while everyone screams.

Robot Morty has eight of the twenty-one lines, and five of them are the exact same sentence about cheddar, barbecue wavy, and sour cream and onion. Rick has six, Summer four, the real Morty two, and an announcer opens with the tagline. So the structure is: relaxed chat, cheerful ad copy, panic, then the ad copy again and again over the panic. Thirty-eight seconds, and the villain is a slogan. It’s the show’s whole attitude to sponsorship compressed into a spot the sponsor actually paid for.

Performing it

Robot Morty is a test of consistency: five near-identical reads with identical cheer, while Rick and Summer scream over the top. The real Morty’s pizza-stack pitch is the longest line and it is quick, so smile through it like a paid spokesperson. Rick’s door line is doubled, and both screams are separate lines. In a two-player room, one player gets the robot’s relentless cheer and the other gets Rick’s dread, which is the ideal split. A good comic angle: let the robot’s cheer get a shade more menacing with every repetition.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
