The scene
Donkey is building a wall through the middle of the swamp, and Shrek wants to know why it is not going around it. Because half is Donkey’s now, he did half the work rescuing the princess and he wants half the reward. The two of them fight over a stick, trade insults, stubborn jackass against smelly ogre, and Shrek storms off. Then Donkey stops him and says what he has been holding in: Shrek is mean to him, insults him, pushes him around. Shrek asks why he came back, and gets the answer about what friends do.
Donkey has seventeen lines, Shrek thirteen. The front half is physical: grunts, struggling, back-off and you-back-off. The back half is Donkey’s speech, a run of short, separate accusations while Shrek mostly listens. It is the film’s real emotional turn, disguised as a property dispute, and it ends on the best-constructed joke in the movie: Shrek appears to forgive Donkey, then finishes the sentence. Nobody wins the argument, which is how you know it is about something else.

Performing it
The tug-of-war lines are shouted over each other with grunting marked in the script, so commit to the struggle noises. Jackass and ogre are a matched pair; hit them with the same weight. Donkey’s speech is six short lines in a row, each a separate charge, and the temptation is to run them together; do not, the pauses are where it hurts. Shrek’s last two lines are the trap: the first sounds like reconciliation, so play it warm, then turn it on the second. An evenly matched two-hander, perfect for a room. Play it as a couples’ counselling session.
