The scene

The morning after Fiona's rescue in Shrek. She sings to a bluebird, the bluebird sings back, and Fiona, the well-mannered princess, keeps raising the note until the bird can't match it and bursts. There are no words. Fiona has seven lines and the bird has five, and every one of them is either a sustained vowel or a whistle. It's a duet, a duel and a punchline all at once, and it runs forty-eight seconds.

The structure is call and response. Fiona's first three notes are long and gentle, the kind of Disney-princess warble the film is parodying; then the exchange tightens into shorter phrases, hers and the bird's alternating, climbing in pitch each time. The last bird line is a high-pitched whistle, which in the film is the one that does it. So the player is singing a wordless melody, and the second player, if there is one, is whistling. Neither job is as easy as it looks.

Performing it

Watch the picture for pitch: Fiona's notes climb, so start lower than you think you need to or you'll have nowhere to go by the fifth one. The first three are the long holds and the breath traps. Whistling into a microphone is loud and spiky, so the bird should sit further back, and the final high whistle is the punchline, so make it strained. It's a natural two-player scene, singer and whistler, and a solo player has to alternate between the two fast. Comic angle: Fiona operatic and serene, bird increasingly desperate.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
