Still from Muffin Man, a scene in Shrek

Take over every line of Muffin Man and see how close you can get.

The scene

Nearly four minutes of Shrek in two halves. The first is an interrogation: Lord Farquaad has the Gingerbread Man on a baking tray, has already dunked him in milk, and wants to know where the other fairytale creatures are hiding. Gingy spits, refuses, panics about his gumdrop buttons, and then gives up a lead in the form of a nursery rhyme, which Farquaad solemnly completes with him. The second half is a dating show: the Magic Mirror is wheeled in, tells Farquaad he is not technically a king, and introduces three eligible princesses as bachelorettes while the guards chant numbers.

Farquaad carries twenty-nine of the sixty-one lines and plays two registers — the sneering torturer and the flustered game-show contestant. The Mirror's twelve lines include three long introductions, each a parody of a dating-show host, and the Fiona one is the longest cue in the scene. Gingy's thirteen are mostly screams, gasps and one very sincere rhyme. Five guard lines and two from Thelonius fill in the crowd. The exchange about the muffin man is one of the most quoted bits of animation dialogue there is, and the joke is entirely in the deadly seriousness both men bring to it.

Performing it

The muffin man exchange only works if neither character smiles: Gingy is bargaining for his life and Farquaad is genuinely following the lead. Gingy's drowning and choking come before any words. Farquaad's rant about fairytale trash and his patience-at-an-end line are the long ones in the first half; the Mirror's three bachelorette intros are the long ones in the second, and the Fiona intro is the trap — a full paragraph, so breathe. Farquaad's indecision, the mumbled numbers and the guards' chant all overlap, which is chaos in a two-player room and enormous fun. Whoever gets the Mirror should do a proper host voice. The dating half is where most people find their energy.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
