Still from Deku vs Todoroki, a scene in My Hero Academia

Take over every line of Deku vs Todoroki and see how close you can get.

The scene

The Sports Festival duel from My Hero Academia, taken from the English dub. Todoroki has spent the whole fight refusing to use the fire half of his Quirk because it came from his father. Deku, broken-fingered and losing, screams at him that the power is his own. What follows is mostly Todoroki: ten lines, flickering between a memory of his mother, a flashback of Endeavor, and his own decision to stop holding back. Deku has six, All Might two from the stands, and the parents one each. Seventy-five seconds, half of them shouting.

Several lines in the list aren't dialogue at all but instructions to scream as if charging an attack, marked optional. That's honest about what the scene is: two teenagers yelling at each other across an arena while the adults panic that one of them could be killed. Todoroki's quiet lines about wanting to be a hero, then his warning that Deku shouldn't blame him for what comes next, are the emotional hinge. His last line is two words of thanks, and after all that noise it lands surprisingly softly.

Performing it

Check your mic gain before the screams; the optional charging yells will clip if you're close, so back off or turn down and go for it. Deku's lines are all in capitals and want to break slightly, like someone shouting through pain. Todoroki should stay low and controlled until his release, so the contrast does the work. The mother and Endeavor lines are inserts, one gentle, one booming, and they're a nice change of register for whoever draws them. All Might's alarmed lines from the stands need a heroic register. Two players get one fighter each, plus flashbacks.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
