Still from You Crying, a scene in Jujutsu Kaisen

Take over every line of You Crying and see how close you can get.

The scene

Five young sorcerers, one of them furious. This is from the Hidden Inventory arc of Jujutsu Kaisen, the flashback to Gojo and Geto as students, and it opens with Gojo asking Utahime, a senior he’s just rescued, whether she’s crying. She is not, and she wants him to be more polite about it. Mei Mei flirts, Geto scolds Gojo for picking on the weak, Gojo asks who’d pick on the strong, and then Shoko arrives, worried, and the mood softens for about four lines before everyone starts insulting each other again. Utahime has ten of the twenty-seven lines, Mei Mei and Shoko five each, Gojo four, Geto three.

It’s an ensemble scene in the truest sense: nobody dominates, the lines are short, and the jokes are relational. Gojo needling, Geto playing the reasonable one while making it worse, Mei Mei amused by all of it, Shoko sincere and then coolly dismissive of the boys. Utahime spends half her lines making grumpy noises, which are credited as lines, and ends the scene on a delayed double-take about how long she’s been gone. That’s the rhythm: quick, overlapping, and warmer than the insults suggest.

Performing it

Five voices in seventy seconds means the trap is blur. Give each a fixed register before you start: Gojo lazy and high, Geto smooth, Mei Mei low and amused, Shoko soft, Utahime tight and clipped. Utahime’s grumpy noises are real cues, so growl. Shoko’s worried line about two days is the longest and the only tender one; her put-down of the boys right after should turn on a dime. The final line, Utahime finally hearing the two days, is the punchline and wants a beat of silence first. In a two-player room you’ll each hold two or three characters, so agree the voices together.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
