Still from It's Not My Wallet, a scene in SpongeBob SquarePants

nope its not mine

The scene

Man Ray's first lesson at what SpongeBob calls goodness school, from SpongeBob SquarePants. The exercise is simple: Patrick drops his wallet, Man Ray returns it. Patrick refuses to recognise it. Man Ray, a supervillain trying very hard to be decent, walks him through the logic step by step — the ID, the name, the wallet the ID came out of — gets agreement at every step, and is still told it is not his wallet. Man Ray has ten lines, Patrick seven, SpongeBob five; the last two of Man Ray's are maniacal laughter as the tickle belt kicks in.

It is a masterclass in the slow burn. Patrick's lines are all short and flat — a nope, a yup, a shrug — and they never change temperature. Man Ray's lines get longer and more carefully reasoned as he tries to build an argument that cannot be refused, until the whole thing snaps and he threatens to tear Patrick's arms off. SpongeBob then scolds him with the calm of a kindergarten teacher. The joy of dubbing it is that the villain is the straight man and the idiot is winning, and everyone in the room knows exactly where it is going.

Performing it

Man Ray is the workload and the fun. Pace his frustration across all ten lines rather than blowing it early: polite opener, puzzled second, reasoned chain, then the crack. His line assembling the ID-wallet syllogism is the longest and wants clear, patronising diction. Patrick should be identical every time — same pitch, same lack of interest — because the flatness is the joke. SpongeBob's interruption is a sharp two-syllable buzzer; hit it cleanly. Two laughter cues close the scene, written as tickling rather than cackling, so aim for helpless, not evil. A strong two-player room: Man Ray solo against Patrick and SpongeBob together.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
