Still from Maki vs Naoya, a scene in Jujutsu Kaisen

Take over every line of Maki vs Naoya and see how close you can get.

The scene

Four minutes of Jujutsu Kaisen, five voices, forty-six lines, and two people counting. Maki Zenin, hollowed out by her sister's death, faces Naoya, the clan heir who spent his childhood sneering at a man with no cursed energy. Naoya has twenty-two lines and a further six as his younger self, most of them contempt or screaming; Maki has ten, several of which are just numbers spoken aloud. Tengen's six lines are calm exposition about projection sorcery, the technique that lets Naoya move at twenty-four frames per second and freezes him if he fails.

The design of the scene is the fun of it. Naoya gets louder and more capitalised as the fight goes on, repeating that he is the one who stands among the strong, while Maki quietly counts his movements and works out the trick. Tengen's lines land like a manual being read over a brawl. The two threads meet when Maki, having seen the twenty-four motions, offers a hug instead of a punch, takes the hit, and asks him — after he has been reduced to retching — whether he could say that again. Her final line is the only joke in a very grim four minutes, and it is a good one.

Performing it

Naoya is a stamina role: the shouted refrain comes back three times in capitals and the retching at the end is four cues of pure noise, so do not spend everything on the first outburst. His young-self lines want a brattier register. Maki's numbers are the trap — quick, out of sequence, and they need to sound like someone tracking something rather than reading a list. Tengen should be slow and unbothered; the line about a twenty-fourth of a second is the longest and most technical, so rehearse it. In a two-player room one player gets most of the shouting and the other most of the calm, which is exactly the fight.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
