The scene

Five minutes of Kung Fu Panda, ninety lines, and a real story inside the fight. Tai Lung comes home to the Jade Palace and Shifu meets him alone; the first exchange is quiet — a former student, a former master, both saying the relationship is over. Then twenty years of grievance come out between blows. Tai Lung has forty-two lines, Shifu thirty-six, and a good third of both are combat sounds: yahs, ughs, struggles, one long falling scream. Po arrives out of breath for the last twelve lines and gets laughed at before he swings a hammer.

The reason this is worth dubbing at full length is the confession in the middle. Tai Lung's accusations climb in volume — who filled his head with dreams, who drove him to train, who denied him — and Shifu's answers are short and defensive until he stops fighting and says, haltingly, that he was always proud and that his pride blinded him. It is the emotional peak of the film and it lands in the middle of a punch-up. After that, Tai Lung wants his scroll, Shifu tells him it has gone, and Po turns up to change the tone entirely.

Performing it

Pace is everything in a scene this long. Tai Lung's capitalised accusations come in a rising cluster of four; treat them as one build with the fourth on top, not four separate shouts. Shifu's apology is seven short cues with hesitations written in — do not smooth them out. The fight noises are the trap: dozens of them, fast, so keep each short and let a few go rather than smearing into the next line. Po's arrival is a gift for whoever gets him — panting, a boast, a laugh, then pain. In a two-player room the split hands someone both master and student at points, which is oddly fitting. Save your voice for the end.
