Still from Goku Super Saiyan Transformation, a scene in Dragon Ball

Take over every line of Goku Super Saiyan Transformation and see how close you can get.

The scene

Namek, the moment Dragon Ball Z had been building toward for a hundred episodes. Frieza has just killed Krillin and, laughing, suggests the boy should be next. Goku's grief turns into something else. He gets out one broken accusation, calls Frieza heartless, and then the rest of his eight lines are grunting, straining and one long roar as his hair turns gold. Frieza has four lines, two of them laughs and gasps; Gohan has a single gasp. Ninety-four seconds, and maybe fifteen words.

This is a scene about a voice breaking under pressure rather than dialogue. Goku's one full sentence is stuttered, halting, with the last word spat out. His promise to make Frieza suffer comes out in fragments between growls. Frieza's little chuckle and his baffled reaction at the end are the only comic relief. Dubbing it means sustaining rage through a minute and a half of near-wordless sound, with a payoff scream that anime fans have been imitating in bedrooms for thirty years. It's cathartic if you let it be.

Performing it

Warm up first. Goku's grunts are low and sustained and will shred an unprepared throat before the roar even arrives. Keep the mic at arm's length for the final scream and turn your gain down; this clip clips. His one real line should stutter on the first word and land the last one hard. Frieza's laugh is small, high and nasty, then his gasp and his surprised question at the end should sound genuinely rattled. Gohan's gasp is a single breath. Two players: one gets the transformation, one gets to watch it happen and regret it.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
