Still from Majin Vegeta Tournament Speech, a scene in Dragon Ball

Take over every line of Majin Vegeta Tournament Speech and see how close you can get.

The scene

Vegeta explains himself. At the World Tournament in Dragon Ball Z, freshly marked by Babidi and asked by Goku whether the fight is the wizard's idea or the old grudge, he answers with ten lines of pride, grievance and history. Goku has two questions, Gohan one, and the Supreme Kai, Shin, gets two interjections about the fate of the universe that Vegeta swats aside. What follows is a speech about a lifetime under someone else's rule, a race reduced to a handful, and a rival who keeps surpassing him and, worse, keeps saving him.

This is the moment Vegeta stops being a villain-turned-ally and becomes a character, and the English dub speech is quoted for a reason. The rhythm is one man talking over everyone: Shin's objection gets a grumbled repeat of the word meaningless, then a shout, then a torrent. It is not a fight scene; the fight is later. It is a man laying out why he needs one. The short lines from the others are interruptions, and the fun of the dub is treating them as such — the more reasonable they sound, the angrier he gets.

Performing it

Vegeta's speech is ten separate cues that need to feel like one accelerating thought, so keep the pressure up between them. The trap is the line listing his grievances in three imperatives — the longest, with a question at the end that wants to be spat, not asked. The stumble where he admits Goku saved him has a written hesitation; keep it. The last two lines are short and should be the quietest part, not the loudest. Goku's two questions want an open, puzzled warmth that makes Vegeta's contempt funnier. In a two-player room Vegeta dominates whoever draws him; the other player should relish being interrupted.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
