Still from Chicken Jockey, a scene in A Minecraft Movie

Take over every line of Chicken Jockey and see how close you can get.

The scene

The Minecraft Movie moment that turned cinemas into shouting matches. Garrett has been pushed into a ring by a mob of Vindicators, Steve is coaching him from the sidelines with no real idea what's happening, and the opponent that drops in is a baby zombie riding a chicken. Steve names it at full volume. Steve has seven lines, Garrett two, and the Chicken Jockey itself has two lines of giggles, clucks and roars with Garrett's screams mixed in. Forty-nine seconds, most of them Jack Black.

The fun is that Steve is delivering sports-movie encouragement into a situation he immediately admits he doesn't understand. He tells Garrett to reach deep, then describes the whole thing as a sadistic fight club, then announces it's to the death with what sounds like enthusiasm. Garrett only gets to ask what's going on and whether he really has to fight a chicken. Then the shout, and then the noises. It's a scene that audiences already dubbed live in theatres, so you're in good company.

Performing it

You know which line you're here for. Everyone tenses for the shout, so the trick is making Steve's earlier lines bouncy and casual, so the yell arrives out of nowhere. Give the fight-to-the-death line real cheer. Garrett's two questions are the straight-man part and want a rising note of panic. The Chicken Jockey lines are pure sound: baby giggles, a cluck, a roar, plus Garrett's screams, so whoever draws those should keep the mic a little further away. In a two-player room it splits neatly into Steve and everyone else, and everyone else is mostly noises.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
