Still from Jotaro vs DIO, a scene in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure

Take over every line of Jotaro vs DIO and see how close you can get.

The scene

The final showdown of Stardust Crusaders, in its English dub. Jotaro and DIO trade twenty-five lines almost evenly — thirteen to twelve — and the balance of the words is all DIO's. He gets the long speeches: mocking Jotaro's dead grandfather, boasting about how The World outclasses Star Platinum, deciding to indulge one last comparison. Jotaro's lines are terse, and several are just angry growls or grunts, with one dry complaint about a love tap and some expensive trousers. Then the talking stops.

What people come to this scene for is the ending: two long stretches of a single repeated battle cry, one word for each fighter, shouted as fast as the picture is punching. Jotaro's final line is twenty-seven repetitions of his; DIO's is fifteen of his. Neither is dialogue in any normal sense — it is breath control and stamina. Before that, though, there is a genuinely well-written villain monologue and a hero who refuses to be impressed, and the contrast between DIO's theatrical relish and Jotaro's monotone is the actual scene.

Performing it

DIO's speech about the grandfather is the cue players fall behind on; it has five sentences and needs a run at it. Play him amused, not angry — the anger belongs to Jotaro's growls. Jotaro's trousers line is the single comic beat and works best completely deadpan. Then the barrages. Do not try to count them in the moment; find a steady rhythm and keep it until the cue ends, breathing in the tiny gaps. A superb two-player room scene, because the split is exactly the fight — one player shouts one word, the other shouts the other — and it becomes a contest of who runs out of air first.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
