Still from Squidward's Dream, a scene in SpongeBob SquarePants

Take over every line of Squidward's Dream and see how close you can get.

The scene

Sleepy Time. Squidward’s dream is the one he would choose: a royal court, a king hanging on every note of his clarinet, and a name, Wolfgang Amadeus Tentacles, that tells you everything. Then SpongeBob wanders in from his own dream and starts whispering. The king wants the man-from-Peru joke, threatens Squidward’s head if the music stops, and SpongeBob, asking only to be trusted, takes over the recital with a la-la-la that leaves the court weeping into its petticoats. Squidward bows to applause he did not earn, and then someone asks what instrument that was.

Squidward has twelve lines and most of them are SpongeBob’s name in various states of alarm, half-said, hissed, growled. SpongeBob has eight, including whispered gibberish, two sung la-la lines and a cheerful goodbye. The Royal Fish has eight, all imperious. The audience gets four collective gasps and cheers, and two courtiers get one line each. The rhythm is stately court formality punctured by whispered interruptions, with a group gasp every time the tension jumps.

Performing it

Squidward’s lines are almost all one word, so the acting is in what happens under it: the growl, the clenched jaw, the smile for the king. The Royal Fish is the big voice, pompous and then suddenly bellowing when the music stops. SpongeBob’s la-la lines are sung twice to the same tune, and pitch matters far less than gusto. The audience gasps are three separate lines, each larger than the last, plus a cheer. Two-player: Squidward and the court against SpongeBob and the gasping crowd. Be as moved as humanly possible on the petticoat line.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
