Still from Dream Journal, a scene in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl

HE RUINED MY DREAM JOURNAL!

The scene

Nine lines, forty-five seconds, three characters, and two of the most committed child screams in cinema. Max wants his journal back. Linus denies taking it. Mr. Electricidad, the teacher, tries to intervene and calls Linus Minus by mistake, then threatens to make the name permanent. Max shrieks that his dream journal has been ruined, and Linus shrieks back that he did not and Max should be expelled. The film has become a much-loved so-bad-it’s-good comfort watch, and this classroom is its most quoted moment.

Mr. Electricidad, played by George Lopez, gets four lines and the only calm ones in the scene. The two boys split the other five, and nearly all of them are shouted. What makes the scene funny is the total sincerity: a grown man making a maths pun about a child’s name and meaning it as a warning, and two kids treating a notebook like a matter of life and death. The two closing screams are back to back, which is where every dub of this either lands or falls over.

Performing it

The teacher’s slip and correction needs a deliberate stumble, followed by a straight face. Max’s scream is short and easy to nail. Linus’s rebuttal is the trap: it is long, it is all one breath, and it ends in a demand for expulsion, so most people run out of air halfway. In a two-player room, one player takes the teacher and the other takes both boys and argues with himself, which is funnier than it sounds. Solo, this is a quick warm-up scene. Play the teacher as a man who is very, very tired.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
