The scene
A restaurant table, a couple, and a declaration of love that runs a beat too long. Nikki tells Bear she loves him more than anyone alive and couldn’t live without him. He checks that she means it, then asks, quite gently, whether her dad really has cancer. The answer is one small word, and the evening falls in on itself. What follows is Nikki saying no roughly a dozen times, pleading that she thought they were having a nice date, while Bear insists over and over that they still are, and would she please sit down.
Sixteen lines, split almost evenly: Nikki carries nine, Bear seven. What makes it such a satisfying dub is the tonal whiplash. The opening is syrup, the pivot is a single flat question, and the back half is pure panic against pure damage control. Nikki’s lines are mostly variations on the same syllable; Bear’s are the same reassurance said with less and less conviction. Nobody raises the stakes with a speech. The scene turns on one word and then spends a minute refusing to recover.

Performing it
The trap is the long run of no
: it’s a single line with about eleven of them, and it moves fast, so decide whether you’re counting or riding the rhythm. Bear repeats that they are having a nice date three times; give each a different colour, soothing, then firm, then frantic. Nikki’s two nice-date pleas should sound genuinely bewildered rather than angry. This is a strong two-player room: one player melts down, the other tries to hold the table together. A good comic angle is to swap it, Nikki icily calm and Bear the one falling apart.
The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
