Still from Luke I'm your father, a scene in Star Wars

Darth Vader vs Luke

The scene

The reveal on Bespin from The Empire Strikes Back, twenty-five lines, Vader sixteen and Luke nine. Vader does most of the talking: the offer of training, the pitch about bringing order to the galaxy, the taunt that Obi-Wan never told Luke what happened to his father. Luke's lines are refusals and denials, plus one very long scream on the way down. Four of Vader's cues are just the mask breathing, which is a strange and wonderful thing to be asked to perform into a microphone.

The scene title uses the version everybody misremembers rather than the words Vader actually says, and honestly that is part of the fun — this is one of the most quoted and misquoted exchanges in film. The rhythm is a duel of tempo: Vader unhurried, every sentence a paragraph, the breathing filling every gap; Luke short, hot and cornered. The final stretch is four denials from Luke getting longer and more desperate, each answered by a breath or a calm assertion. Whoever plays Vader has to be slow enough to be menacing and clear enough to be understood through an imaginary mask.

Performing it

Vader's trap is the galaxy speech, one long sentence and the only place he goes over a breath's worth of words — take it slowly and do not run into the next cue. The mask sounds are real cues with real timing; a steady in-out through your teeth is closer to the original than any impression of the voice. Luke's scream and his last, very long no are the two big physical moments and both want to start from nothing. Keep his other denials small and rising. A two-player room is the natural home — one deep and patient, one young and breaking — and the surest laugh is a Vader who breathes with more enthusiasm than he speaks.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
