Still from Batman Interrogates the Joker, a scene in The Dark Knight

"The Dark Knight (2008)

The scene

The interrogation room in The Dark Knight, from Gordon's opening question to the two addresses that decide the film. The Joker owns it with thirty-eight of the sixty-seven lines. Batman has eighteen, but roughly half of those are grunts and heavy breathing, and Gordon has eleven, most of them in the quiet first act before the lights come up. It plays as two duets. First a commissioner trying to bargain with a man who has nothing to lose. Then a vigilante trying to hit an answer out of someone who wanted to be hit.

The Joker is a talker and Batman is not, and that asymmetry is the whole texture. Heath Ledger's speech about civilised people and their code, and how they'll eat each other when the chips are down, is a proper monologue with pauses, tongue clicks and small laughs written in. Batman's replies get shorter and louder as his leverage runs out, until he's shouting the same question twice into a face that keeps giggling. Gordon's final exchange is clipped and practical: which one, and where. The fun of dubbing it is pacing a five-minute scene where one voice never hurries and the other can't.

Performing it

Don't do a Ledger impression; do his rhythm. The Joker's long speech about morals is the trap, so mark the pauses and let the tongue click and the two laughs actually happen instead of skipping them. Batman's growl will wreck your throat if you hold it for eighteen lines, so pitch it low but not gravelled, and save the real damage for the two shouted demands. His heavy-breathing lines are real cues, not filler. Gordon wants a flat, tired, decent voice. In a two-player room one person takes the Joker and the other takes both cops, so one of you does all the talking.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
