Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi have a heated confrontation.

The scene

Mustafar, after Padmé has collapsed, before the lightsabers come out. Anakin accuses Obi-Wan of turning her against him; Obi-Wan tells him he did that himself. From there it’s the whole ideological rift of the prequels compressed into eighteen short lines. Anakin has ten, Obi-Wan eight, and the lines are fragments: Anakin lists what he’s brought his new empire, peace, freedom, justice, security, as four separate cues, and Obi-Wan answers the last one with a question that is just three words and a raised eyebrow.

It’s a famously stiff piece of dialogue, and that’s exactly why it’s satisfying to dub. Every line is a declaration. Nobody hesitates, nobody talks over anyone, and the emotional temperature only goes one way. Anakin is petulant and grand at once, a man announcing his new empire to the one person who’ll never be impressed; Obi-Wan is heartbroken and trying to sound like a Jedi about it. Sixty-one seconds, no action, and a finish on the word democracy, which is a hard word to make dramatic. That’s the challenge.

Performing it

Because the lines are so short, the trap is speed: fire the fragments off like a list and it’s over in forty seconds with twenty of dead picture. Let each one sit. Anakin’s four-word list should be four separate hits, each more pleased with itself. Obi-Wan’s longest line, about becoming the thing he swore to destroy, is the emotional centre and wants to be slow and quiet. Resist a Vader voice; he isn’t Vader yet. Two players is the natural fit, a hot voice and a cool one. For comedy, keep the gravity and shrink the stakes to something domestic.
