Still from I'm Flying, a scene in Titanic

Jack and Rose at the bow of the Titanic.

The scene

The bow of the ship at sunset. Rose finds Jack, tells him she’s changed her mind, and before she can finish explaining he shushes her and starts giving instructions: hand out, eyes closed, step up onto the rail, hold on. Jack has thirteen lines and nearly all of them are gentle commands. Rose has nine, and several of those are a laugh or a two-word reply. The whole scene is a small trust exercise conducted at whisper volume with a hundred-foot drop underneath it.

It’s one of the most parodied moments in film, and dubbing it you find out why: the line that gives the scene its name arrives after nearly two minutes of hushed setup, and it can go either way. Play it straight and it’s a love scene held together by James Horner’s score, which stays in. Play it sideways and Jack sounds like a driving instructor. Jack also half-sings a snippet of an old song about a flying machine at the end, under his breath, which is a nice small moment to either honour or ruin.

Performing it

Volume is the whole game. This is wind-and-strings quiet, and the natural urge is to project. Don’t. Jack repeats his hold-on instruction twice in a row and people rush the second one; leave the gap, because he’s waiting for her to actually do it. Rose’s little laughs are easy to skip but they carry the affection. The sung fragment at the end is barely a tune, so mumble it. A strong two-player scene: the lines alternate cleanly and each part is small enough to hold in your head. For comedy, keep Jack’s instructions exactly as sincere and change what he’s apparently teaching.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
