Still from Peppa Pig Intro, a scene in Peppa Pig

Take over every line of Peppa Pig Intro and see how close you can get.

The scene

Fifteen seconds, and most people alive can hum it. Peppa introduces herself, then her little brother George, then Mummy Pig, then Daddy Pig, and each family member answers with a snort. The whole family falls over laughing, Peppa says her name once more, and one final snort closes it out. That is the entire opening sequence of every episode, and it has become a cultural constant for anyone who has been within earshot of a preschooler in the last two decades.

The line count is deceptive. Peppa has seven of the twelve lines, George and Mummy two each, Daddy one, but only four lines contain words, all of them Peppa’s introductions. Everything else is a pig noise or a laugh. So the player is really performing snorts in four registers: Peppa’s bright chirp, George’s tiny squeak, Mummy’s gentle mid-range, Daddy’s low rumble. It is the shortest scene on the site and one of the hardest to do without cracking up, which is rather the point.

Performing it

Pick four distinct snorts before you hit record; pitch is the whole characterisation, and the words are over in six seconds. Peppa’s intros are short and evenly spaced, so the timing is forgiving. The tricky moment is the group laugh, where Peppa, George and Mummy all laugh at once. In a two-player room you will be laughing over each other, which is exactly right. Solo it is short enough to take five or six passes until the snorts sit properly. Try it as a grave nature documentary, or just nail the British kids’-TV brightness dead on.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
