Still from He's Just Standing There Menacingly, a scene in SpongeBob SquarePants

Take over every line of He's Just Standing There Menacingly and see how close you can get.

The scene

Night patrol. Patrick, in a police hat, radios SpongeBob to say he no longer wants to be a policeman, he is scared, and he thinks it is getting dark. SpongeBob tells him to put his siren on, which Patrick does by mouth, six lines of wee-woo. Then Patrick spots the maniac at the intersection where SpongeBob happens to be standing and files the report that became the meme: the man is just standing there, and then, after a pause, the adverb. From there SpongeBob screams and runs while Patrick sends him to every hiding place the maniac has just vacated.

Patrick has thirty lines to SpongeBob’s twenty, but SpongeBob’s back half is nearly all screaming and running-away noises, so Patrick has almost all the words. The rhythm is slow, nervous radio chatter, a pause, then panic that gets faster with every beat, hide behind the building, no he is there, the sign, no, the streetlight, no. It ends with the maniac in a mailbox and SpongeBob shrieking into the night. A two-hander with one talker and one screamer, which is a rare and lovely shape.

Performing it

The meme is two lines, and they only work as a pair: the first quiet and puzzled, then a hard cut to the adverb, which the script capitalises for a reason, so bellow it. The siren is six separate lines and the last one is louder and more panicked than the rest. Patrick’s hide-here-no-wait run in the middle is rapid, six instructions in about ten seconds. SpongeBob’s later lines are all screams and running noises; give each a slightly different flavour so they do not blur. This is the ideal duo scene. Try Patrick as a hushed nature documentary narrator.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
