Still from Is This the Krusty Krab?, a scene in SpongeBob SquarePants

NO, THIS IS PATRICK!

The scene

Thirty-six seconds, ten lines, one phone. Patrick has been left in charge of answering the Krusty Krab telephone and answers the same question three times with the same wrong answer, growing louder and more offended each time. SpongeBob gets the setup and the gentle correction; the Phone gets three identical questions; Patrick gets five lines, three of which are the escalating denial, plus a grunt and the closing outburst. The caller never learns anything and Patrick never understands what went wrong.

This is one of the shortest scenes in the game and one of the purest. There is no plot to hold in your head, just a rhythm — question, no, question, louder no, question, furious no — and a punchline where Patrick discovers the name of the building he is standing in. The Phone is a proper character here, and whoever plays it has to ask the same thing three times without changing anything, which is its own kind of discipline. The final anger sound and the nonsense expletive that follows are where most of the acting budget goes.

Performing it

The whole scene is the three-step escalation, so plan your levels before you press record: mildly puzzled, then indignant, then full shout with a grunt tacked on. Patrick's third denial is the trap because it runs past the shouting into a second sentence — save breath for it. The Phone should be flat and patient every time; the comedy comes from Patrick, not the caller. SpongeBob's correction wants a small, careful voice. In a two-player room this splits into Patrick versus everyone else, which is close to ideal. Solo, it is a good warm-up for finding how loud you can get without clipping.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
