Slop Song

The scene

Twenty-four seconds from Lesbian Space Princess, and almost all of it is Willow singing. Six of the seven lines are hers, and they are the same confession restated with increasing specificity: she has a crush, it is true, it is on Saira, specifically Saira, that song was about Saira. Saira gets the one spoken reply, and it is a flat acknowledgement that she had, in fact, worked that out. That is the entire scene. It is titled a slop song for a reason.

The comedy is the gap between effort and information. Willow keeps adding clarifying verses to something that was never unclear, and the sung delivery — earnest, a little wobbly — makes every extra line funnier. Saira's response is the punchline precisely because it is so small. For a dub, this is a chance to sing badly with total sincerity, and to land one dry line at the end. Short scenes like this are where the game is at its most forgiving: you can take three runs at it in the time a longer scene takes to load.

Performing it

Willow's lines are sung, so decide on a tune — the original's or your own — and hold it; the joke depends on the verses sounding like one song rather than six announcements. The line that narrows it to one specific person is where you can be most self-conscious and most funny. Do not oversell the final verse; let it be the point where she runs out of ways to say it. Saira's line is a single beat and needs a completely different energy: bored, kind, done. A lovely two-player scene despite the lopsided split, because the person with one line has the best line.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
