The scene

A musical number from Hazbin Hotel, and one of the strangest. Charlie asks Nifty to tell a visitor how much she loves the hotel, expecting a nice testimonial. What she gets is a bright, chirpy song about how disgusting the place is: the trash, the bugs, the needles, the rats she has to fight off with a knife, and how much she adores cleaning all of it. Nifty has twenty-two lines and Charlie nine, and Charlie's are almost entirely horrified interjections trying to steer the song somewhere safer. It doesn't go anywhere safer.

Then it changes language. Asked to help differently, Nifty agrees cheerfully and switches to Japanese for several verses, romanised in the line list, while Charlie asks whether anyone can understand her. The lyrics in the English half are filthy in both senses, and several lines use language this page won't repeat, so know that going in. The performance is the appeal: a tiny, manic, delighted voice singing about horrors with total sincerity, against a boss who just wanted a quote for the brochure.

Performing it

This is sung, so pick a key you can sustain in a high, squeaky register before you start. Nifty's lines come fast and the long held notes about the hotel of her dreams are the ones to plan breath for. The Japanese verses are written phonetically; read them as syllables and keep the same bounce. Charlie's part is small but it's the comedy: each interruption should sound a little more defeated, ending on her exhausted attempt to spin it. Several lines contain crude words, so decide whether to sing them, swap them or hum through. Two players: one sings, one suffers.
