Still from Light Yagami's Speech, a scene in Death Note

Take over every line of Light Yagami's Speech and see how close you can get.

The scene

L is dead, and Light Yagami finally gets to gloat. The scene from Death Note opens with Ryuk's two lines — a shrug of disappointment that the interesting part is over — and then hands everything to Light, who has twelve. Three of those are laughter, building from a snicker to a quiet laugh to the full thing, and the rest is a victory speech delivered partly to a dead rival and partly to a bored shinigami. Everyone still trusts him, the police are next, and Ryuk is promised a new world to watch.

Light's laugh here is one of anime's most imitated moments, and the speech that follows is the rare villain monologue with nobody left to threaten. It is pure self-congratulation, addressed to a person who can no longer hear it, which is what makes it so satisfying to overact. The rhythm is a slow ignition: two dry lines from Ryuk, three escalating laughs, then short declarative sentences that get grander until the closing promise. It suits anyone who has ever wanted to deliver a triumphant speech to an empty room, which, in this game, is most of us.

Performing it

The laughs are the whole scene and they are three separate cues, so do not blow the big one on the first. Start with a genuine snicker, something being suppressed, and let it get away from you. The speech that follows is short lines; resist rushing them, because each is Light savouring a different part of the win. The question aimed at L wants a mocking tilt. The final two cues are one sentence split in half — keep the break clean so the last line lands as its own beat. Ryuk is a small, dry part for a second player, and a good one: his job is to be unimpressed.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
