The scene
Squidward, driven mad by the noise next door, discovers he can whisper into a bubble and float it across the yard, and uses it to break up the friendship. SpongeBob says something sweet, but what arrives at Patrick’s rock is an insult in SpongeBob’s voice, and Patrick fires back that yellow is ugly, then resorts to fart noises when words fail him. The squabble escalates through turkey and big dummy until SpongeBob storms off. Squidward eats and laughs. Patrick lifts his rock in a huff and gets squashed underneath it.
Patrick has fourteen of the thirty-one lines, SpongeBob nine, Squidward eight, though several of Squidward’s are stage directions: whispering, blowing bubbles, laughing while eating. His actual insults are the sharpest writing in the scene, the dollar-for-every-brain line and the job tip about the pet shop and the newspaper. The joke runs on dramatic irony. The audience hears both messages, the two friends only hear the poison, and the whole thing is scored to a jazz-cool Squidward enjoying himself far too much.

Performing it
Three registers: SpongeBob’s wounded sincerity, Patrick’s slow-building dopey rage, and Squidward’s velvet malice, which should be whispered and pleased with itself. The middle volley, turkey, bigger one, still yellow, is quick and childish, so keep it snapping. The fart sounds are lines, two of them, and so is Patrick being squashed. In a two-player room give one player Squidward and SpongeBob and the other Patrick alone, since Patrick is nearly half the scene by himself. The best comic angle is in the whisper: Squidward should sound like a man who has finally found his calling.
The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
