Still from Yu and Mi, a scene in Rush Hour

Take over every line of Yu and Mi and see how close you can get.

The scene

Detective James Carter walks into a dojo, demands the name of the old man in front of him, and is told: Yu. Not you, him. Yes, Yu. Thirty-four seconds later he has learned that the other man is Mi, and has lost his temper completely. It’s the oldest routine in comedy, the one about who’s on first, and Rush Hour plays it absolutely straight. James has twelve of the twenty-four lines, Yu ten, Mi two, and Yu’s two syllables of name do more work than most monologues.

The fun is in the two speeds. Yu is unhurried, patient and, crucially, correct about everything he says; he really is telling the truth every time. James accelerates. Each round of the loop makes him louder and more certain that he’s being mocked, and the arrival of Mi tips him from confusion into a threat to whoop everyone in the building. The exchange is genuinely rapid, with lines only a few words long bouncing back and forth, so it plays like a tennis rally where one side is serving underarm and the other is smashing.

Performing it

This is a rhythm scene, and the trap is pausing to think. The lines alternate almost every second, so learn the shape: question, name, objection, name. Yu should never speed up and never get louder; his calm is the engine. James does all the climbing, and the last two lines are the only real shouts, so don’t spend them early. Mi has two lines, both his name, the easiest and most satisfying part on the site. Built for two players, one furious and one serene. Solo, the switching is fast enough to be a real test. Don’t overthink the accents; the timing is the joke.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
