Still from I Miss the Part Where That's My Problem, a scene in Spider-Man

Take over every line of I Miss the Part Where That's My Problem and see how close you can get.

The scene

Peter Parker has just pinned Bonesaw in two minutes, and the promoter stiffs him: the ad said three thousand for three minutes, so he gets a hundred and should count himself lucky. Peter protests that he needs the money and gets a sneering brush-off. Seconds later a robber empties the cash box, runs for the lift, and Peter steps aside to let him pass, then hands the promoter his own words back. It is the moral hinge of the whole Raimi trilogy, and it plays, in the moment, as a petty little revenge joke.

The promoter has ten of the twenty-three lines and most of the volume. Peter has three, two quiet and one payoff. The thief, Dennis Carradine, has seven, all shouts, grunts and panting, plus a cheerful thank-you on his way out. The officer has three. The shape is a sneering negotiation, then a burst of robbery chaos, then two soft lines to close, and the whole scene is built so that the last line lands like a door shutting.

Performing it

Peter’s three lines are all quiet, and the payoff only works if it stays quiet and a little smug; the promoter said it first with a sneer, so match his phrasing and flip the attitude. The promoter’s three-grand-for-three-minutes line is the fast one. The middle is chaos, the thief’s yells, the promoter getting hit, the shout about the stolen gate, so keep the energy high but the lines are brief. In a two-player room, pair Peter with the officer and the promoter with the thief for maximum contrast. A good angle is the robber as an extremely polite man.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
