Still from Peter did not care for The Godfather, a scene in Family Guy

From The Griffin Family History

The scene

The Griffins are sealed in a panic room, Peter has finished recounting the family history, and since they are all going to die anyway he unburdens himself of one last secret. He did not care for The Godfather. Lois and Chris erupt. Chris lists the cast at rising volume. Lois demands an explanation and gets the immortal non-answer: the film insists upon itself. Peter admits he has never seen the ending, having bailed three times at the scene with the men in easy chairs, and closes his case by naming The Money Pit as his answer to everything.

Peter carries twelve of the thirty-one lines, Lois nine, Chris eight, with Stewie and Brian getting one apiece. It is a scene about how people actually argue about films: nobody finishes a sentence, everyone talks over each other, and the person with the least coherent position is the most certain. Peter’s lines are full of false starts and half-words; Lois is exasperated; Chris is scandalised on behalf of every annal. The rhythm is a family dinner argument, not a debate, and that is why it is so quotable.

Performing it

Do not tidy up Peter’s stammers. The stumbles and restarts are written into the lines, and smoothing them out kills the joke. His long line about six and a half hours and never finishing the film is the one to watch: it has to fit its window while sounding like a man losing his thread. Chris’s cast list ends on a shout, so build to it. Lois’s what does that even mean is the straight-man line; keep it flat. In a two-player room, give one player Peter and the other the entire outraged family. Play Peter with total sincerity, as someone who has really thought about this.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
