The scene

Lisa has a bad dream, wakes Homer, and within twenty-four seconds he has armed himself. Ten lines total — Homer six, Lisa three, Bart one scream — which makes this one of the shortest packs in the library.

The joke is the speed of the escalation. Homer starts comforting, sleepy and reasonable: lie down and tell me about it. Lisa gets as far as the word boogeyman and he is gone — screaming the word back at her, ordering the windows nailed shut and going for the gun. His last line is waking Bart with the phrase a boogeyman or boogeymen, and Bart's only contribution is the scream that follows.

Performing it

Twenty-four seconds, so the whole thing is one gag and the timing is everything. Homer's first three lines have to be genuinely gentle — sleepy dad energy, no hint of what is coming — or the turn has nothing to turn from. Then go straight to maximum with no ramp: the funny part is that there is no middle. The pluralisation in boogeyman or boogeymen is the second-best joke in the pack, so land it clearly. Lisa stays reasonable throughout. A great first scene for a new player, and a good quick one to open a room with.
