Still from the Scaredy Cat scene in The Simpsons

Take over every line of Scaredy Cat and see how close you can get.

The scene

Seventeen seconds from The Shining parody, and one of the most reposted Simpsons clips there is. Marge is backed up the stairs with a baseball bat and Homer wants it. Eight of the ten lines are his and most are the same demand.

Give me the bat, Marge. Gimme the bat. Gimme the bat. The repetition degrades into gibberish, then into the taunt everyone quotes — hahaha, scaredy cat — and then, immediately, into Homer falling down the stairs.

Performing it

This is a delivery test rather than an acting one: everybody knows the cadence, so the timing on the repeated demand is the whole score. Let the words blur as it goes — the third and fourth should be sloppier than the first — and keep the volume flat rather than rising, because Homer isn't angry, he's insistent. "Scaredy cat" is sing-song and should be almost cheerful. Marge has two lines and both are real fear, which is what makes the scene funny rather than silly.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
