The scene
Arthur Morgan, coughing, sits on a bench with a nun and tells her he is dying. Thirty-six lines over three minutes — Arthur nineteen, Sister Calderón sixteen, and a conductor who calls all aboard once and ends the conversation. It is the quietest scene in the game and the one people remember.
Arthur admits he got tuberculosis beating a man to death for a few dollars, then lists what he has lost: a son, a woman who loved him, a mother, a father he watched die. She does not argue with any of it. She tells him he is the only one who does not know himself, and that he should gamble that love exists and do a loving act. He says he is afraid. She tells him there is nothing to be afraid of, and the train takes her away.

Performing it
The hardest thing here is the coughing, and it is not optional — five or six of Arthur's lines are nothing but breath, and they are the reason the scene works. Practise a wet, tired cough you can sustain without hurting yourself, and let it interrupt him mid-sentence rather than sitting neatly between lines. Play him low and worn out; he never raises his voice once. The Sister should be warm and completely unshockable — she hears I beat a man to death
and does not flinch. Three minutes of restraint makes this a genuinely good two-hander for a room where both players want something other than shouting.
