Take over every line of Oh My Gah and see how close you can get.

The scene

Osaka dreams about a talking cat-father and it goes exactly as well as that sounds. Fourteen lines split evenly between Chiyo-chichi, who greets everyone in cheerful nonsense English, and Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga, who is doing her best to keep up. Forty-nine seconds.

It opens with "hello everynyan, how are you, fine thank you" and the shriek it deserves, then drops into Japanese: he wishes he were a bird, his daughter is going to America, and he is a cat — and if not a cat, then what? Osaka's last observation is that his real face reminds her of somebody, and then she apologises.

Performing it

Mostly romanised Japanese, and nobody is marking your accent — commit to the sounds and the rhythm and it works. Chiyo-chichi should be relentlessly upbeat and slightly too loud, the way a dream character is. Osaka's "OH MY GAAH" is the line people know, and it wants full-body panic rather than a comedy yelp. The exchange in the middle should move quickly, like two people talking past each other, because neither of them is really answering.

The dialogue is muted and everything else stays — the score, the room, the picture. You record each line over the silence and the scene plays back with you in the cast. How a dub is made · what the score measures.
